See the June qtr of 1876 birth registration of :Joseph Mitchell, registered in Chard, Volume 5c, page 476
ordered May 28, 2012 from the GRO today.. James.
June 13, 2012, received the 1876 birth registration of Joseph Mitchell and confirmed to have the identical birth date ( 14 April, 1876) as the person claiming to be Joseph Derek Leslie while at Cambridge University in 1899-1903 as per the Cambridge Alumni records.

So Joseph Mitchell and Joseph Derek Leslie were one and the same person. jca

 _______________
See the 14 May 1876 christening of a Joseph Mitchell in Merriott, Somersetshire, parents : John Mitchell and Eliza Mitchell.
It certainly would appear that John Mitchell, born Merriott, Somersetshire, eventually goes to Cambridge University as John Derek Leslie for some obscure reason ( and obscure financing to obtain a university education !!)

I have also tracked the Will of Ada Mary Dyson (m. Leggett) first husband, one Joseph Derek Leslie who ended up in the Immigration records with one 'Minnie Louise Derek Leslie' and found that while he left a sum of approx 282 pounds in his Will, she one year later left over 20,000 pounds in her Will. It looks like young Joseph Derek Leslie was in the habit of looking for ladies with a lucrative dowry. Am sending the will records of both off to Alan Hughes as I think he is more interested in John Dyson's family info than we are???
 Cheers,
 Maureen, May 2012

It all started with entering various names in the updated Wills Probate database.............
LESLIE, Joseph Derek of 332 York Street, George, Cape Province, South Africa died 16 Jul 1942 at The Hospital, George. Probated in Llandudno 8 Dec to Minnie Louise Derek Leslie, widow. Effects: 259 pounds 15s 10d.
LESLIE, Minnie Louise Derek of Duncliffe Nursing and Rest home, Durrant road, Parkstone, Dorsetshire, widow, died 6 Jul 1943. Probate Llandudno 10 Sept to Florence Marie Whitelock (wife of Arthur Redcliffe Whitelock) and Joseph Ashby Kannreuther, export merchant.
 Effects: 21350 pounds 5s 5d.
So, Joseph left Minnie the princely sum of 259 pounds. Looks like he, from an early age, preferred older women who were very well off financially. Minnie (nee Kannreuther) and unmarried can be found in the 1911 Census living at 23 Barkston Gardens, Earls Court, Kensington with her widowed mother, Frances. She gives her age as 38, but was at least 42. Coincidently, Sir Henry Allen William Johnson and his wife Georgina lived at 12a Barkston Gardens some years later, so i expect these places were pretty nice digs.
I can find no record of Minnie & Joseph being married, but they travelled extensively and used Arthur Whitelock's business address (he was a solicitor and husband of Minnie's sister, Florence) as their contact when returning to England.
I've reviewed the passenger lists again and one would think that they were being paid to stay away from England (perhaps they came home once a year to pick up another pot of money?). They a variety of ages when travelling as well. Between 1931 and 1937 they embarked from 6 different ports and gave at least 4 different names of country of last permanent residence.
A true Remittance Man wouldn't you say? And in the end, he was back in South Africa, 35 years after he was petitioning the courts to have Ada Mary restore his conjugal rights.
It's also worth noting that extensive research has still not produced any record dissolving the marriage of Ada Mary Dyson to Joseph Derek Leslie. Neither have we detected any marriage documents for Ada Mary and Edward Leggett or Joseph Derek Leslie to Minnie Louise Kannreuther. It would be nice to get these two issues resolved so we can move on and consider Joseph Derek Leslie (or whatever his real name is) just another "blip" in our family trees. Cambridge Alumni says Joseph was born 13 April 1876 in Merriott and LDS shows a Joseph Mitchell, son of John and Eliza Mitchell christened 14 May 1876 in Merriott. The senior Mitchell was an agricultural labourer with 7 kids, so if this is our guy, someone must have paid his way into Cambridge maybe? [Maybe even paid for by Ada Mary Dyson ??, They should have been well acquainted back in Merriott prior to 1901 or even earlier .. jca]
 Cheers,
 Maureen
