bullet  General Notes:

James Thompson, was a ship-builder in Carleton on the west side of the harbour in Saint John, N. B.. James Thompson owned the ship "Stella" in 1853 which sank in a extreme gale off the US east coast only two and a half months after she was built.
He then went into partnership with George and James Stackhouse from 1853 until 1863 and was considered to be one of the leading ship-building firms. During that time they built thirteen large wooden sailing ships, half of which were over 1000 tons. Many of these Vessels were sold in the British Isles. After James dissolved the ship-building partnership in 1863 he began to work in the ship insurance business where he was believed to be the first Lloyds of London agent in Canada. He moved his family to Brooklyn, New York in October 1881 where he took a position in the marine insurance business. They purchased a home at 123 Lincoln Place, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. James died of a bad cold and fever on June 5th 1882, only ten months after he moved to New York. His remains were returned to Saint John for burial. His wife Catherine and family remained in Brooklyn and did not move back to Saint John. Joseph Thompson (James' son) died in Saint John in Sept. 17 1882, only months after James death.
{The Canadian 1871 census notes James Thompson's place of birth as New Brunswick, however the 1881 census notes his place of birth as Ireland. The age of family members in the 1881 census appear more accurate than those in the 1871 census according to dates from the family Bible.}
