bullet  General Notes:

Ruth was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident on the highway north of Kamloops, on November 8th, 2000, after having just spent some very happy times with her family in Kelowna, B.C.. Among other things, she and George had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family at Bill and Carol Thompson's home. They were on their way back to Prince George mere days later when the accident occurred. George received relatively minor physical injuries.

The following was written by her family, and printed on the program for Ruth's funeral service:

***
Seven years ago, when faced with the loss of a special member of our family, we discovered just how solid our foundation is. We found that together we are solid as stone, but apart we are mere pebbles of sand.

And today, as we face another tragedy, we face it together, with the mountain of strength that we learned to find in one another. We learned this strength by example, exhibited first by the heads of this family, George and Ruth, our Rock of Gibraltar, our foundation.

Ruth was a very special woman who dedicated her life to us. She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, a friend, and most of all, the pillar of our rock solid foundation. She gave us roots to stay grounded and then wings to take flight.

Today, as we mourn the loss of half of our Rock, none of us are quite ready to say "goodbye", but we can honour Ruth's memory by taking to heart the words she whispers from Heaven:

"Come on Lovey, come on Dearie, put that foot forward and carry on."

Love, Your Family

***

Ruth was truly a family person. She was also an avid cook and especially a baker, having worked at a bakery as a young woman. She liked to say that her kitchen was "Ruth's Diner" when any of her children or grandchildren wanted lunch, or just a cup of coffee or tea and some of her delicious sweets. She spent hours in the summer and fall, canning, pickling, and otherwise preserving fruits and vegetables from her own garden, as well as what ever caught her eye while on trips to the Okanagan. Much came from Uncle Roy's garden on Munson Road in Kelowna. She also did a lot of needlework and sewing, and her home was filled with her own handicrafts. She rarely, if ever, made food in small quantities, so her freezer and pantry were always full to the brim. Ruth never forgot her meager beginnings, and maintained her frugality all her life. She was more than generous in her love and caring for her family, and she was a very special aunt.
