Mary Annie was the oldest child of Samuel Barnes and Mary Elizabeth Pratt. She was the first wife of Harry Symons Bate and died shortly after their baby Edith Annie Bates was born. The baby only lived for 4 months. Harry then married the Barnes second daughter Florence Ellen Barnes.
Mary married Harry Symons Bate, son of Christopher Bate and Margaret Sleep Symons. (Harry Symons Bate was born on 8 Sep 1863 in St Judy, Cornwall, England 34, christened on 1 Jan 1864 and died on 21 Apr 1937 in Burnaby, B.C., Canada.)
