Lawrence learned to play the guitar when he was 10 years old. He and Norton joined forces with three others and formed a small band called the "Rhythm Rascals". The group disbanded when the family moved to Kelowna in 1935. Lawrence worked in the grocery business for a number of years and then accepted an offer to sell shoes with a shoe merchant. He left that job and became the Manager of Copp the Shoe man in Kelowna. He stayed with the company for 33 years until his retirement in Mission, B.C. in 1983.
In Kelowna, Lawrence was the statistician for the Kelowna Packers hockey team.
He took up golfing in 1973 and has been known to play over 100 rounds a year.

Lawrence next married Vera Edna Embury, daughter of John James Embury and Margaret May Mann, on 27 Feb 1965 in Kelowna, B.C., Canada. (Vera Edna Embury was born on 20 Mar 1920 in Kamloops, B.C., Canada,5 died on 17 Apr 1995 in Mission, B.C., Canada 5 and was buried in Kelowna, B.C., Canada.). The cause of her death was cancer.
