"He arrived in Canada at age 17 years. Joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1914. Served in the Mediterranean on a minesweeper. Married August 5, 1917. Returned to Canada after the war, bought a house on Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby. Worked for Columbia Paper Company. Served as Police Commissioner until 1925 In Burnaby. Was secretary for the Labour Party then Canadian Commonwealth Federation was formed. A deep thinking man who read volumes and collected classical records ordered from England. "
Excerpts from a letter written July 29th, 1975 by Bertha Sawyer:
"Only son of Florence and Harry Bate, born in E. Dulwich 1895. Went to Goodrich Rd. school, same as myself. Won a scholarship at 10 years of age. Went to Battersea Polytechnique. Then worked for the London County Council school supplies. Taking on similar work in Canada at Columbia Paper Company until his death in 1945."
